Nine golfers beat Daly in Long-Drive Challenge
by Associated Press
Nine recreational golfers each won $100,000 yesterday by outdriving
perennial PGA Tour driving-distance leader John Daly in the inaugural
Pinnacle Distance Challenge final in Mesquite, Nev.
Daly only beat three of the dozen finalists at the Palms Resort GC in
the culmination of the year-long Pinnacle promotion. All contestants used
Pinnacle Power Core golf balls throughout the 10-city regional
competitions and in Thursday's final. Daly faced each competitor
one-on-one, with each alloted four drives. The best drive of each was used
in determining the winner.
Other than four of his defeats, in which he hit all four balls out of
bounds, Daly's shortest counted drive was 305 yards, when he beat Brian
Davidson of Baldwin, Ga., 305-304. Daly's dozen opponents averaged 330.0
yards per counted drive, with Scott Smith of Cincinnati beating Daly with
the final's longest counted drive, 364-329.
