Tiger to fill Murray's shoes in 'Caddyshack' role for AmEx ad
by Associated Press
Bill Murray will be up for a best actor Oscar on Sunday for his role in Lost in Translation, but Murray might be upstaged during the Academy Awards show by a commercial that takes off on one of his most famous roles.
In an ad for American Express, Tiger Woods will reprise the role of Carl Spackler, Murray's gopher-chasing assistant greenskeeper in the 1980 comedy Caddyshack.
Woods has long listed Caddyshack as his favorite movie, so he was a natural choice for the part.
Why Murray was snubbed by the Academy for his role as a man with a license to kill gophers has been a mystery for decades. A sampling of dialogue:
Sandy MacReedy, head greenskeeper: ''I want you to kill every gopher on the course.''
Spackler: ''Correct me if I'm wrong, Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers they're gonna lock me up and throw away the key.''
MacReedy: ''Gophers! Not golfers!''
