MRS GORDON & 101 FRENCH TEACHERS The French Foreign Ministry has launched a triennial plan to send 10,000 French teachers throughout the world on a high profile trip to France , which has a two-fold objective: Firstly to thank and reward international French teachers who have been actively involved in the promotion of the French language and culture in their own countries, and: Secondly, to immerse these teachers in an enthralling cultural, linguistic and pedagogic French experience. It is the goal of the French Foreign Ministry to create an international platform for these teachers, who are seen as the ambassadors of the French language in their countries, to enable them to explore new teaching methods and allow them to interact with similar professionals, hereby stimulating an exchange of ideas and techniques, which will ultimately diffuse French language and culture worldwide. 101 French teachers from several countries have been chosen to initiate this three-year programme. There is a contingent of 30 French teachers from all over South Africa , consisting of university lecturers, Alliance Francaise tutors and secondary school teachers from the public and private school sectors. CARLA GORDON, the senior French teacher at St Dominic's is privileged to have been included in this group. She has been the IEB Convenor for French in Gauteng for the last four years and has organised 2 National User Group Conferences and several Regional User Group meetings. She has also been working closely with the French Embassy's Cultural and Linguistic Bureau, (SCAC), which has taken great interest in the teaching of French in Southern Africa . As the IEB has taken over the administration and examination of non-official languages in the new FETC structure, Carla has also found herself liaising between public and private school French teachers throughout South Africa in an attempt to smooth the transition process as much as possible. The French Foreign Ministry is also expecting the South African contingent of public and private school French teachers to continue the ongoing discussions surrounding this transition, while in France . The trip will last 15 days, from the 10th to the 25th July 2007, and will afford the teachers the wonderful opportunity of being in Paris for Bastille Day on the 14th July, as guests of the French Minister for Foregin Affairs. The teachers will also be attending a course at CAVILAM in Vichy , which is a very high profile, internationally recognised university. The St Dominic's French Department is just one of thousands worldwide which uses televised broadcasts on DSTV's channel 90 created by CAVILAM's dedicated lecturers. While in Vichy , the teachers will be living with French families and immersing themselves in the culture of Auvergne , in particular. Once the day's lectures have been completed, many activities have been planned, such as hiking in the volcanic hills of Auvergne , outings to places of historical interest and tasting of the regional cheeses! Owing to the high-profile nature of this visit, the teachers will also be expected to attend an official cocktail party at the Mayoral residence in Vichy . St Dominic's School is honoured to be participating in such an enriching experience. Bon voyage et bon retour, Madame!! St Dominic's School, Kruger Street, Boksburg.
