Translated by Eugene Ivantsov, Ihor Solovey and Serhiy PechonkinPart 1 [Published in Ukranain version on 19.07.2005] Do you know why there is no “10 richest kids in Ukraine” contest? Because there is no competition whatsoever. There is just one champion. And his name is Andriy Victorovych Yushchenko, Ukrainian president’s eldest son. While people speculate over the PM Tymoshenko’s future son-in-law, the president’s son was undeservedly forgotten. People living in Luteranska Street, situated near Bankova, are telling stories about president’s son and his indecent behavior. For instance, he speeds up to 100 km/h, shifts to the wrong lane, blocking other vehicles. But what’s really interesting is the cars in president’s son disposal. Some time ago Andriy Yushchenko drove Mercedes jeep. But then he gave preference to Mercedes CLS 500. The car is not a cheap one – over $90 000. But it’s extremely nice and pleases the eye… It turned out the car belonged to Andriy Yushchenko’s girlfriend Hanna Pavlovych who lives Luteranska Street, 24. But he can drive this vehicle only with Hanna sitting in the front seat since he doesn’t have the permission to drive her car alone. Just one person is allowed to drive this car (except Hanna) whose name, surname begins with “M”. For ethical reasons we won’t give the full name. Sure it was kind of a challenge for president’s son who drives a far more banal car. The feeling of male supremacy and higher social status made 19 year old president’s son renew his autopark. So Andriy Yushchenko drives BMW M6 now. One should admit he has a good taste. This car might make car enthusiasts go nuts and its price drives tax officers mad. We called AVT Bavaria, the official BMW dealer in Ukraine. - Morning. Do you have a BMW M6 in stock? - We have to order one. The waiting term is about three months. - How much is it? - Standard model costs 133 000 euro. - Are there many such cars in Kyiv? - Just one. - Was it purchased in you salon? - No. Is it that important? The end of conversation. Having analyzed this information and the fact that Andriy Yushchenko drove such car we identified the car owner. UP correspondent tired to learn more about teenage president’s son gentility. It was quite an interesting story that almost ended in a scuffle. So, Andriy Yushchenko came to his girlfriend’s house around 23:00. He parked the car teasing DAI (traffic police), recently liquidated by his father. The car was just at the central reservation. While Andriy was sitting in the car his bodyguards took their stands. Although they observed traffic rules and parked their BMW at the curb. In some minutes another car went by Yushchenko’s BMW. It was the son of former deputy Interior Minister, fired because of corruption accusations. The kids chatted for a while. In ten minutes DAI car (license number 2022) drive up to Andriy’s automotive wonder. But having communicated with Yushchenko’s bodyguards they disappeared. BMW M6 was still blocking the way making other cars press to the pavement. Later on we found these traffic police officers and asked why they hadn’t fined the driver. They explained: “What can we do? Yushchenko liquidated us today! Besides, we know who was in the car. That’s either Yushchenko’s bodyguard or his driver”. One evening in Yushchenko Junior’s life In a few minutes Yushchenko Junior’s motorcade hit the road. But the author of this article went on with his quest, to keep looking for what I needed to see. As it was difficult to believe Andriy Yushchenko drove a UAH 810 000 car, I had to document it. It was dark in Luteranska Street and pictures turned out really poor. I didn’t give myself up to despair and went to VIP parking spots near Passage. I came up to Fellini restaurant, beloved by Andriy Yushchenko. And a miracle! The only BMW M6 in Kyiv was parked near the restaurant, in a proper place this time, not in the middle of the road. There was nobody in the car. Yevhen Lauer, editor-in-chief of the web-site Tribune was driving along the street and started taking pictures. So there were two of us who photographed Yushchenko’s car. In a minute Yushchenko’s bodyguard came out. - Hey! Who are you? - We’re just taking pictures of a nice car. How much does it cost? - 50 grand. Apparently president’s son doesn’t tell the truth about his car even to his bodyguards. So we told him the real price. Then the bodyguard inquired who's "paying" us.Suddenly president’s son came out of the restaurant. That was what we were waiting for and we took Andriy’s pictures on the background of his car. Logically he should have waited in the restaurant not to compromise his father. Without saying a word Yushchenko got into car and parked it on the other side! That was an absolutely unnecessary maneuvre as the car didn’t disturb anybody. On the other side a UAH 800 000 car still looked as conspicuous as ever.Andriy Yushchenko had several ways to handle the problem with the press. He could have come up and fib some “fairy tale story” to feed the journalists. But instead of president’s son came his bodyguard and demanded to show our IDs. For some reason he asked only Yevhen Lauer to do that.Since the bodyguard refused to show his ID it became clear that he wasn’t a representative of the State Security Service that is responsibly for highest officials’ safety. After a futile attempt, the guy went back to the restaurant. He came back in a minute but didn't come up with anything new: a couple of insults and another demand to show our IDs. When we were about to leave he tried to get into Lauer’s car. Lauer put the car into gear and the bodyguard was left tete-a-tete with his questions.Sure, that was interference into Yushchenko Junior’s private life. We just thought that people should know what car a third-year student of Institute of Foreign Relations Andriy Victorovych Yushchenko had. Let’s not forger that he is just 19 years old. We are also interested in what allows him to drive BMW M6 his father should work 25 years for (as known the president had UAH 2 600 per month till June).Besides we are eager to know why Yushchenko Junior drives a car with a Czech license plate. We failed to get to know when the car entered Ukraine, whether it is registered here and what customs duties should be paid off. So, if any MPs want to carry out an investigation, here is the cars license number: cz 3U1 0401.And the last thing: Andriy Yushchenko's passion for luxurious things is striking. It’s known that, for instance, the president’s son has a very specific cell phone. It’s not trivial Nokia or Motorola but a Vertu mobile phone. If that doesn't sound impressive, we might consult you that these phones have a cost of a good car. Vertu cell phones are on sale in Kyiv in “Crystal” store on Volodymyrska Street. You may learn there that a model for men costs from 4 850 to 30 000 euro. At the same time internet shop www.ibasta.com.ua offers Vertu phones for $43 500. The high price is for platinum frame. They say, Andriy Yushchenko has the platinum one. Although, he might just possess the one made of “white gold”. Some people claim they saw president’s son in club “Ibiza” in Odessa. He paid with seven one hundred dollar notes. Yushchenko also prefers club “Decadence” in Kyiv. He drinks “Crystal” champagne there. The price is quite decent – over UAH 6 000. Generally speaking, there are legends about president’s son, despite his dislike for publicity. We managed to learn where he found his “delicate” bodyguards. It turns out that Andriy Victorovych is guarded by former bouncers from Kyiv club “Chaikovsky”. That’s an interesting story as well. How can you trust president’s son to the people who are not allowed to carry a weapon? Or do they carry one anyway, thus violating the law?P.S. UP addressed Andriy Yushchenko to comment on these events, with president’s press-secretary as mediator. She handed over Andriy Yushchenko’s statement:”That evening I was going to the movies (two movies were on that evening “Fantastic four” and comedy “If your mother-in-law is a monster”, UP comment)The car I drove is not mine, it belongs to my friend. For ethical reasons I won’t tell his name. As to the bodyguards, my relatives decided to hire private guards for me during the election campaign. One of the guys became my friend, and a big helping hand. To tell you the truth he often helps me in situations like that one near Fellini when he demanded respect for my private life. My family pays for the guard. (I also contribute my share). I must confess that being a politician’s son is an enormous responsibility. Especially when you’re the president’s son. I respect mass media and understand their rapt attention to politicians’ kids. On the other hand I’d like journalists understand and respect my right for private life. I’m not a politician and I’m not ready to show my private life. I understand that my surname is a big responsibility in itself. At the same time I’m an grown-up, independent person; I don’t want to be just the “president’s son”. I study and work at the same time for some years already for a commercial firm. I try to be financially independent. I don’t have autoparks, but I earn for my living myself. Concerning cars, I use my mother’s car”.Part 2 [Published in Ukranain version on 22.07.2005]The story with Andriy Yushchenko’s BMW M6 arouse true interest in Ukrainian society. The fact that president’s son drove a UAH 800 000 car with Czech license plates is not just a typical “gutter press story” as some people from Yushchenko’s circle are trying to convince us. It’s fulfillment of the president’s command who swore everybody would be equal for the law. This “car story” gives more than enough reasons for various suspicions. That’s why Ukrayinska Pravda decided to help our hero’s father. We tried to proceed with the investigation. And we got some new information, not much, though. First of all we should give Andriy Yushchenko his due for the explanation, UP got from president’s press secretary. So, president’s son pleaded guilty. The crime presupposes confiscation of this car miracle. No, it’s not that he parked the car at the center reservation and managed somehow to persuade DAI officers, who shattered his quiet, to leave him alone. Well, that’s something else. Penalty area for Yushchenko’s son Andriy Yushchenko chose the most non-banal explanation for why he drove a car, too expensive, as for a 19 years old president’s son. He didn’t say he had found the car in the forest with the ignition keys in. Nothing of the kind! According to Yushchenko Junior the car was given by his friend whose name he wouldn’t tell for ethical reasons. Ok, imagine the president’s son said the truth. Then he had no right to drive this car. We’ve got an explanation from the representative of the liquidated GAI. The “representative” chose to be incognito. So, the legendary BMW had Czech license plates. That enables the car owner, if he’s a foreigner, to drive this vehicle for two months on the territory of Ukraine. Sure after a series of legal procedures. If the car owner wants to further drive his vehicle, he should leave Ukraine and then come again. It enables to drive the car another two months. It’s the legal procedure of evasion of registration and necessary payments which would be $30-40 000 for BMW M6. If the car owner is the citizen of Ukraine who imported the car from abroad, then he should register it in 10 days in DAI, have temporary Ukrainian license plates and the foreign ones should be handed over to MPEO. A temporary log book should be also issued. Neither president’s son nor his mythical friend did that, although they drove the car for more then ten days. So, we may come to conclusion that his hypothetic friend is a foreigner if he fearlessly drives it in Ukraine with Czech license numbers. But there is one weak point in this legend about “buddy with BMW”. It’s impossible to get power of attorney for the temporary imported cars. Thus, the president’s son can’t drive BMW M6. Sure if the car owner is sitting beside and can prove he owns the car then everything is ok from the legal point of view. But there was nobody in the car except Andriy himself and his girlfriend Ann. None of the “phantom friend”. UP addressed State Customs Service and Kyiv MPEO-8, dealing with foreigners. Both institutions claimed whenever the letter of attorney was issued only the owner was empowered to drive the car with foreign license plates. Otherwise it’s a direct violation of law “About norms of import, customs registration and taxation of personal belongings, goods and vehicles imported to the customs territory of Ukraine”. It says: “Vehicles temporary imported on written liability of return removal can’t be passed over to other persons”. That’s why there might be two conclusions: either Andriy Yushchenko is the owner of a UAH 800 000 car, violating the law of having not registered in a 10 day term in DAI. Or it’s not his car and then he doesn’t give a damn about the law. Then his meeting with DAI officers should have ended up in confiscation of the car and transportation it to the penalty area since it was driven by a person who was not empowered to do that. That should have caused small fine and fee for parking spot in GAI penalty area. As known, he wasn’t arrested and he wasn’t driving the car just once. Maybe he drives it now, and who known, maybe is going to do that in future. President’s son was in the car every evening in Luteranska Street, in Kyiv. Moreover, he was seen driving BMW M6 on July 9th, on Rishelyerska Street in Odesa. There are witnesses who’re ready to confirm that in public – that’s ICTV journalist Olexandr Butyrsky. A car from the city of brothelsMeanwhile Ukrayinska Pravda went on looking for Czech auto show that sold BMW M6. As known, the car’s license numbers are cz 3U1 0401. UP was told in Czech embassy in Kyiv that the letter U meant place of car’s registration – Ustetsky region. Almost immediately our reader Serhiy from Dresden set contact with us. Dresden is situated 45 km from regional centre of a neighboring country – Usti nad Labem; and Serhiy often visits it. “Having glanced at the photo I can say that these are not transit license plates. The car owner should be official resident. Usti nad Labem is known for its criminality and high rate of unemployment in Czech Republic. It’s also famous for its brothels, nightclubs and Ukrainian mafia. It attracts clients from Germany as it’s just 30 km from the border. If the car belongs to his friend we do have further questions”, Serhiy wrote. We also had some questions. On the other hand we don’t know for sure if the car is registered in this “shady city” or in other neighboring towns. Except license plates, it was also possible to see the name of auto show this car was purchased in. It’s got the name “Autonagy” and is situated in the town of Chomutov, Ustetsky region. Ukrayinska Pravda gave them a call. According to Mr. Nagi, auto show owner, who spoke poor Russian and German the car was purchased by a client from…Ukraine. “The car is not sought for. It’s difficult both to buy and sell it”, said Mr. Nagi. He didn’t specify the client: “It’s top secret”. There was nothing unusual about such answer, so we told directly that the care was believed to belong to president’s son. Mr. Nagi didn’t let chew his ears off: “As long as everything’s ok with the papers I don’t care who bought the car. And everything was ok. The customer is a different subject” Under such circumstances we could check the car at Customs Service. But as they claimed, there is no centralized data base. So to check the vehicle we should go to the custom-house where BMW M6 crossed the border. Ukrayinska Pravda counts on deputies’ help who might carry out interpellation which is more likely to be responded. ”My family will account to you” When the first part of the article was published we got to know more about Yushchenko’s guard. According to the law he should be protected by state bodyguards. As known, Andriy Yushchenko claimed he addressed to the private firm for protection. According to UP sources these are bouncers from Chaikovsky night club. UP has got a letter from one Ukrainian magazine. It describes an interesting story happened in nightclub Decadence, the favorite club of Yushchenko’s son. It was a quarrel between photographer of this “glossy magazine” and Yushchenko Junior’s bodyguard. The subject of the quarrel was the pictures taken in the club. It all ended up in a grandiose scandal: “It looked like an ordinary criminal showdown. The guards were armed; they uttered threats and used foul language. Andriy himself encouraged such behavior of his guards who looked rather like gangsters than bodyguards. He was quietly sitting and sipping his champagne; hugging his girlfriend Ann”. UP’s journalistic investigation will go on and he hope to find out who’s the owner of BMW M6. We would also like to know what that lucrative part time job is, that enables president’s son to live a life of a sheikh. Sure declaration of Yushchenko’s family income is a must in such a situation. Recently Yushchenko stated: “I give you my word I’ll report on every action of mine. So will my family”. Well, we believe this moment has come. UP addressed Iryna Herashchenko to get comments but she replied the answers would be possible after her come-back from Japan. Maybe secretariat hopes the scandal will “melt away” and the problem will solve itself. Not this time! The first part of the article has been downloaded 70 000 times. Some newspapers with circulation of over 100 000 re-published the article. The story penetrated Russian press. It was also the screamer of the most popular Ukrainian periodicals “Today” and “Facts”. The president’s reputation can be saved by sincerity we hope for.Part 3 [Published in Ukranain version on 27.07.2005]If someone considers that the scandalous history with president's son Andriy Yushchenko can be finished – he is mistaken. At the best – it remains to be seen.Once again we draw attention that the substance of the issue is not in the car that costs 130 thousand euro and not in the mobile phone for 4 thousand dollars. The problem is that not once in the history of mankind in such a manner a payoff of high-ranking officials was made through their children or relatives. At the beginning of Kuchma's presidency one of his assistants and one of prime ministers presented Elena Franchuk with an expensive watch and a necklace. And that was done absolutely not from the humanitarian reasons. Moreover, the president has placed a bar – everyone will be equal before the law without dependence on posts and surnames. The behaviour of president's son and the reaction of the president do not show that it will be so. We bring to notice that the actions of new authority as to relatives and close miss the declarations. In this article there will be no reflections about whether the president had the right to make the claim, which he has afforded on Monday after session of Ministry. We will talk about old and new suspicions, which still remain concerning the son of the first person of the state. The car without license plate near a casinoAndriy Yushchenko is a very self-confident young man. After beginning of the scandal with the BMW M6 that ostensibly doesn't belong to him, but to his friend, he has found an original way out of the situation. Probably, having decided to disguise in an original way, Andriy Viktorovych has removed a license plate at all from the automobile and has continued to use the BMW M6 simply without recognition symbols. Last Saturday the car of the son of the head of the state was found under the casino-restaurant "Mario". It stood without license plate directly under a traffic sign "A stop is forbidden" in Tolstoy Street. It was easy enough to ascertain that it was Andriy Yushchenko's car and not the automobile double without license plate. There and then under the same traffic sign there was a car of his girlfriend. Moreover, the security guard of Andriy Yushchenko has gone out to drive away journalists from the BMW M6. He started to threaten both to break hands and simultaneously to file lawsuit to the Supreme Court for infringement, that is the security guard, rights for a private life. Obviously he didn't know that such lawsuits could be considered in regional and city court. "Ukrainska Pravda" has decided to conduct an experiment and to check up, how the militia will react to the application, that there were suspicious persons near an expensive car without license plate. We have addressed by phone to the attendant of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Kiev, and in three minutes officers from the Public service of protection have arrived. Having checked up that there were no traces of breaking in they lost interest to it and did not begin to check why the car was without license plate under a traffic sign "A stop is forbidden". In the process they have been exchanging words that it was "Yushchenko's car". Then the author of this article once again called the attendant on the Kiev Ministry of Internal Affairs. Attendant's name is Yury Sahnovsky, and he has informed that there were DAI officers and they did not found the reasons for reaction. It was the second case for a week (the first – the parking on a traffic strip in Lutheranska Street) when Yushchenko's son has escaped punishment for violation of the traffic regulation at the presence of the correspondent of "Ukrainska Pravda". That was very sad because literally one week ago under similar circumstances a tow truck dragged the car of my friend to penalty platform.Besides, in general driving without license plate is considered to be the top of impudence. Arguments such as "and if the son of the president does not disguise, and simply removes the plate before going to casino" look ridiculous. If for no other reason than in a couple of hours, on Sunday morning, the same BMW M6 with black empty places instead of license plate stood on the closed parking near the house of president's son. In fact will anybody believe that Andriy Yushchenko has a habit to lock the license plate in a sideboard when he goes to sleep? The official answer of the Ministry of Internal Affairs signed by minister Jury Lutsenko actually admits the violation of law by the son of the president. At the same time, on Monday Yushchenko himself has called "lie" the claims that his son ignored the laws. However, as the press secretary of the president Irina Gerashchenko has explained to "Ukrainska Pravda", "Victor Andriyovych has had very tough conversation with Andriy". Yushchenko himself has demanded from militia to keep under steady watch observance of traffic rules "by everyone regardless of make of cars and license plates". But will he force militia to react regardless of a surname? Andriy Yushchenko leaves the BMW M6 to himself A story with the parking in this scandal – is only an episode though it concerns the most obvious examples, which prove that the promised equality of all before the law has not come. In the meantime it seems that Andriy Yushchenko is not going to abandon the BMW M6, which actually was an incitement to the scandal. On Monday during press conference Victor Yushchenko lost self-control after specifying question, whether really his son rents the car. "I say to you, he pays for rent! You listen, please, what I said a minute ago", – Yushchenko declared then. Actually the specifying question was necessary – then people will not be able to say that the president have been misunderstood, or that he meant the sewing machine, and not a notorious miracle of German auto constructors. The matter is that Yushchenko has admitted the illegal actions of his son. Again we come back to the status of automobiles on temporary import – Yushchenko's son drives exactly such BMW M6 that has Czech license plate. Such cars are not leased because it is forbidden by the law "About the order of import to Ukraine, customs registration and taxation of personal things, goods and vehicles, which are imported by citizens into customs territory of Ukraine". Only the owner of this automobile can drive it. As both Andriy and Victor Yushchenko have denied the possession of this machine it turns out that all these weeks the son of the president has driven it illegally. On inquiry of "Ukrainska Pravda" the Minister of Internal Affairs Yury Lutsenko has told shortly: "Cars on temporary import cannot be leased". According to Gerashchenko's words the further destiny of the BMW M6 will be like this: "The car belongs to some familiar of Andriy. Now it is on a re–registration. Its license is re–issued from the non–resident on a legal person in Ukraine. Andriy wants to make a rent contract that will allow him to take the car on a permanent basis". We have asked again how much will cost the rent of the BMW M6 for the son of the president. Gerashchenko has promised to find out and on the next day she told: "More than thousand dollars a month". It is necessary to recognize that it is the privileged rate for such cars. For example, in Kyiv firm "Mia–Avto" a rent of cheaper models of BMW such as BMW 745 and BMW 735 will cost 250 dollars a day. In the Kyiv branch of the international company "Hertz" there is the fifth model of BMW. A rent costs 40 dollars an hour, but only with a driver. "Without a driver we do not give a car of such class – it is too risky ", – we've been told there.Abroad there are even more unhumorous prices for BMW rent. For example, the sixth model – not BMW M6, but simpler model BMW 645 cabriolet – costs from 700 up to 824 euros a day. These are the prices of the Elite Rent–a–car Company, which operates in large West–European cities and resorts. A model of the car that Andriy Yushchenko liked so much is offered neither in Kyiv, nor in the foreign firms, because it is special. Now they actually offer us to believe that president's son has some good friend, who is ready to rent the car at a cost, which is tens times less than the real cost and to lose thus thousands dollars a month. Everyone has a right to decide whether it is a fairy tale or the truth. However, the reasons of the friend's generosity to the president can be different – for example, the arrangement that he will receive something in return from the son of the president or, God forbid, from his father. And it maybe simple set up … Let's notice also, that without the official registration of the car nobody will give you insurance. In case of road accident that the father of Andriy is so afraid of (and because of this possibility the guards have been employed), there is a soil for blackmailing president's son. There is, however, another version – the words about the friend, registration of the car on any firm and the subsequent rent can be the truth. However those are dummy people called to turn off the claims for the automobile from president's son, which obviously is not comparable with legal incomes of president's family. One more friend at the wheel of the BMW M6 Making a start from the version that the car is not only de jure, but also de facto nevertheless does not belong to Andriy Yushchenko, "Ukrainska Pravda" has continued to search the owner of the car which is ready to make so broad gesture concerning the son of the president. On Monday we received the answer to the letter of enquiry from director of Czech firm "Autonagy" Yan Nad. We shall remind that the "Autonagy" is "native land" for the legendary BMW M6, which is driven by the son of the president – it follows from the name direct under a place for license plate. In the letter, directed to us by e–mail, Yan Nad has changed his mind comparing to what he told one week ago in the interview. Then he both in German and in Russian insisted that the car was sold to the client from Ukraine. Now in the letter in Czech language he wrote that "the car is registered on our firm "Autonagy". "Why this car can be seen in Ukrainian capital? Very simply! It was lent to my friend in order to arrive to Ukraine and to learn the conditions for commerce – sales of cars – in Kyiv. And sure thing to offer the car to sale ", – wrote Yan Nad. "I can confirm that there was interest to this type of BMW from the Ukrainian side", – the head of a motor show also has noted. "The fact that the son of president Yushchenko is photographed near the car – I think it is accidentally (like when people in the street approach and have photograph taken on a background of cars). I do not argue that it is really interesting from the point of view of advertising if it would be the buyer. But I can confirm that the son of president Yushchenko was not the final customer", – Yan Nad also added. It only remains to be surprised because of different comments of Mr. Nad and to absence of logic in it – the friend (again the friend!) has arrived on very expensive car through half of Europe to find out conditions of a car business in Ukraine and at a time to sell it! The Minister of Internal Affairs Yury Lutsenko has also become interested in the BMW M6. According to his words, he has entrusted the chief of Kyiv Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs "to find out who is the proprietor of this car and whether he is the resident of Ukraine". "Also we shall react accordingly", – Lutsenko promised on Monday evening. On a question whether the press can also learn a name of the car owner Lutsenko said that in order to get his name it was necessary "in an elementary way to direct inquiry about it". "Ukrainska Pravda" has made it and has received the answer to all questions except for the owner of the BMW M6. As was explained in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, it was the competence of the State customs service. "UP" has also directed inquiry there and hopes to receive the answer in the near future. An apartment in Lipki at the price of Troeshchina residential slumDuring the development of the scandal with the BMW M6 the son of the president has received a new plotline. It concerns Andriy Yushchenko's lodging. His apartment is in the Darwin Street, 3. A place is unique – it is in the center of Kyiv, Lipki, two minutes from Bessarabka and from one of Andriy's most favorite club "Arena". At the same time – it is very silent place; moreover, there is the center of children's creativity near his apartment. Darwin is the most "presidential" street of Kyiv. In its beginning there is office center "Horizon Tower" where Victor Pinchuk works, the second son-in-law of Leonid Kuchma. Igor Franchuk, the first son-in-law of the former president, lived or still lives in the house number three. And now the son of the present head of the state has lodged there. The prices for the real estate in this area are among the highest not only in Kyiv, but taking into account the superheated Ukrainian market, probably, in all Eastern Europe. Therefore recent move here by Andriy Yushchenko has complemented a picture of unlimited financial opportunities of Yushchenko's son. Andriy Yushchenko's apartment is on the fifth floor, which has been built up on this building. Besides, there is a penthouse – a floor under a roof. From the face side it is not visible, but from behind the house it is easy to see that there are more premises. As the press secretary of the president Irina Gerashchenko has explained, there are three apartments on the last floor of this house, and Andriy occupies one of them. "The floor space of the apartment makes more than 200 square meters", – Gerashchenko told. But the most interesting, as always, is in the answer to a question, on what bases the son of the president lives there. "Andriy rents her from his familiar ", – Gerashchenko told. So again the anonymous heroes of nowadays have appeared on a stage. It is obvious that the question on cost of rent has thrust by itself. Gerashchenko has promised to find it out from the son of the head of the state, she has kept a word and the next morning informed: "Andriy pays for rent of the apartment several hundreds dollars ". This recognition has shocked even more, than the rent cost of the BMW M6.In Kyiv there is a real estate agency "Lipki", which specializes just on this place. On its website there is an apartment of 108 square meters in Academician Bogomolets Street for 2 200 dollars a month – it is not far from Tolstoy Street. In Lipskaya Street the lodging of 80 square meters is rented for 2 thousand dollars. On Klovsky descent, which is located further away from Kreschatik, the apartment of 170 square meters costs 2 800 dollars a month. In order to get reverification we have called to another real estate agency "Planet Obolon". There we have been told they did not rent four-room apartments in Lipki for less than 2 500 dollars a month. It means that as in case with the BMW M6 there are certain people, which are ready to receive several tens thousand dollars a year less, but to live under the same roof with the son of the president. Nobody argues that it can be real friendship. But nevertheless it would be incorrectly to reject suspicions that someone selfishly renders such services to president's son. "Adviser" turns out to be "builder" Now let's talk about the legal incomes of the new hero of nowadays. As Victor Yushchenko told that his son worked in a consulting firm and besides "conducts a number of projects" many skeptically adjusted citizens had a doubt. After all president's son expenses are high, and the 19 years old young man without higher education hardly can count on more than 600-700 dollars a month. That is this sum obviously will not suffice to rent BMW M6. Moreover, Yushchenko has told that his son earns "little money". "Ukrainska Pravda" again has addressed for details to Irina Gerashchenko and has learned that Andriy Yushchenko "works as a manager in two successful companies which are engaged in construction and insurance ". She refused to reveal the names of the firms for fear of gathering of hundreds of journalists under the windows of the firms. On a question concerning Andriy Yushchenko's professional functions Irina Gerashchenko told: "Search of customers, and also development of engineering specifications, conversations with clients". Probably, the son of the president has some exclusive knowledge, because he studies the international economic relations, and it is a little bit far from the field of his professional activity. "The incomes of this firm allow Andriy to earn and to receive dividends at a rate of several thousand dollars a month ", – the press secretary of the president has added. Thus she has generated a number of new questions – as reception of dividends assumes Andriy's participation in the share capital of these firms. However, according to Gerashchenko's words, president's son as gesture of good is ready "to promulgate his income declaration in 2005". As to the last year "Andriy told that his accounts department had submitted the declaration". We have not received texts of Yushchenko and his spouse income declarations. According to the press secretary, "nothing has changed in presidential income in comparison with 2004, and it can be taken for base". "There haven't been any especial changes in the income declaration of Katerina Yushchenko – she is registered as the private businessman who leases some apartments". As is known on a website of Central Election Commission the total sum of the cumulative income of Victor Yushchenko for the last year has made 34 790 grivnas and 25 kopecks, and of the members of the family – 480 756 grivnas 85 kopecks. In total it falls short from 100 thousand euro, which is the cost of BMW M6. But stop! We do not need to forget – in fact it is the car of the friend. And the apartment belongs to the friend too. And the Vertu phone too. One of the results of this history can be a wish that we all have such friends as Andriy Yushchenko has. According to different sources, legal millionaires David Zhvaniya and Alexander Tretiakov can be those friends. David Zhvaniya is the Emergency Situation Minister and also he is the godfather of the last Yushchenko's son Taras. Tretiakov is the first assistant of the president. After the poisoning Yushchenko lived in Tretiakov's apartment. They are indeed friends of Yushchenko's family. But their remoteness from business raises doubts and such presents to the son of the president – if they really have made them – raise questions. One more result: as the press secretary has informed, after all the events the president told to his children to be engaged in public work. "And still we remember how the family of the president has appealed not to give them any expensive gifts. Andriy has joined this appeal", – Gerashchenko added.Part 4 [Published in Ukranain version on 05.08.2005]Last week president Victor Yushchenko called Ukrayinska Pravda. Most people thought the story with financing of Yushchenko Junior’s luxurious life was over. People form president’s circle swear that father and son Yushchenko had a “serious talk”. So, everybody should cool down and stop undermining president’s authority ‘cause it will be difficult to carry out reforms without people’s trust in Yushchenko. Another high official tried to persuade that UP was just used and stuff like that. Some minister asks in a confident voice: “How much did Tymoshenko pay you?”. Others are pretty cautious – God forbid Yushchenko might think they are involved somehow in this scandal. People just don’t understand that press may do its job without “orders and commands”. This story about Yushchenko son was so evident. To gather all these compromising facts about Yushchenko Junior’s life we needed no SSU connections, sunglasses and camouflage. Andriy Yushchenko never tried to avoid publicity and hide his way of life. Our Ukraine members and capital clubbers know about cars, cell phones and bills he pays. We are sick and tired of this. Most readers are. But we have to keep on our investigation. Whatever you might think the story’s not over. We haven’t got answers to our questions. We are assured that Andriy Yushchenko, after “serious talk with his father” won’t drive the legendary BMW M6. First of all, in an interview in Ukrayina Moloda, he claimed just on the contrary. And even if he gave up the idea of driving BMW M6 that doesn’t deny the fact that someone backed him up providing with super-low car rent. People who might have influenced the president, with his son a mediator, are still unknown.Another thing is that Andriy Yushchenko pays rent of $200-400 for an apartment which rental is ten times higher. Who are these friends who arranged “socialism” for president’s son? Instead of handling the scandal authorities chose to hush it up, having added that “it’s president’s family drama”. We promise we won’t leave this story especially since we have more reasons to doubt observing laws by either Andriy or his mystical friends. The thing is that BMW M6 has Ukrainian license plates now. We do not have evidence that it was president’s son who fastened them to the car. On the other hand it would be naive to think of it as of coincidence. On this photo you can see BMW M6 rented by Andriy Yushchenko. The car was parked in the yard on Darwin Street 3. That’s where Andriy Yushchenko rents an apartment. The car has the following license number 511 28 KA. We were surprised as all the vehicles have a different standard – “two letters-four figures-two letters”. For instance “AA 1010 II”.And BMW M6 has old standard license plates – “five letters-two figures”. DAI stopped issuing them this spring. This puzzle can be compared with the story of ghost-ship. How does rental car with Czech license plates have old-type Ukrainian numbers now?We addressed a lawyer who preferred to stay incognito taking into consideration resonance if the case. He assured us that it was absolutely forbidden to drive with old-type license plates. That’s what MIA decree says “About regulating of using special light devices and documents and improvement of vehicles’ registration”, April 2nd, 2005. So, BMW M6 with old-type license plates is violation of the law. We addressed one of the MREVs for the consultation. They gave us the same information. To drive the car with license plates which are no longer issued is the height of conspiracy, taking into consideration that a week ago Yushchenko, not to draw attention to Czech license numbers, preferred to drive his beloved car without license plates at all.Besides, to get Ukrainian license plates for this BMW M6 one should pay almost 70 000 euro as customs duties. Well, that’s a lot of money even for Andriy Yushchenko’s friends. That’s why it’s quite possible someone decided just to hang Ukrainian license plates, thinking it would draw less attention to the car.And it’s pretty witty: traffic police is empowered to stop car in case of violation of traffic rules. So if you accurately drive BMW M6 nobody is going to bother you and check if these are valid license plates. But even if DAI checks the car, that will cause petty fine of UAH 35-85. Evidently, it’s cheaper to drive the car with fake license plates than to pay UAH 400 000 as customs duties. But what a misfortune! BMW M6 got into spotlight again. We addressed MIA inquiring what car had license number 511 28 KA. We also would like to know the car owner. According to license number it’s registered to body corporate. We haven’t got the answer yet. We ask our readers who have contacts in militia for help. We don’t know what’s happening to BMW M6 now. The car didn’t show up at the parking spot near Andriy Yushchenko’s house, where he rents 200 m2.The rest of the story is purely mystical. When gathering information for the article, president’s press secretary, Iryna Herashchenko, gave us a call. She told she knew we were going to publish new material about president’s son. She failed to name the source of this information. That’s strange, since just a couple of people knew we had taken pictures of BMW M6. The information was discussed over the phone. So, we have leakage of information. That’s why we have enough reasons to think UP phones are being actively tapped. Like back in the old good Kuchama’s days. Iryna Herashchenko stated that Andriy Yushchenko had nothing to do with this new story. The president’s son wasn’t in Kyiv at that time, she claimed.Should you notice any typo, grammar or stylistic mistake, please select the relevant text and press Ctrl+Enter.
